Gen App Builder · 2023

Gen App Builder was one of the products I worked on as we responded to ChatGPT. The question was how to bring that kind of interaction to a company’s own information.

Google announced Generative AI App Builder on March 14, 2023, with a fuller demonstration on March 29. It brought search and conversational tools together so developers could build applications grounded in their own data.

From App Builder to Vertex AI Search

The search and conversation products introduced through Gen App Builder became Vertex AI Search and Conversation in August 2023. I led UX for the search tools: connecting data, configuring the experience, and helping developers check the answers.

Agentspace · 2024 onward

At Google, I worked on Gen App Builder, Vertex AI Search, and later Agentspace, now Gemini Enterprise. These products brought search and generative AI to company data, first through tools for developers and later through an app for employees.

Leading the design team

I also manage a team of designers and UX researchers. I hired external design agencies and freelance designers to help develop new concepts, strategy documents, and design guides.

Mockups could not show how a model would actually behave, so I built working prototypes on the Gemini API to test it before engineering committed to a design. With the sales team I built custom demos that helped close multi-million dollar contracts with Fortune 500 retailers.

For Google Cloud’s generative AI design patterns, I contributed the idea of giving people control over generated responses.
